Manhattan Special’s Vanilla Cream Soda

Manhattan Specials Vanilla Cream soda

Manhattan Special's Vanilla Cream soda

Manhattan Special’s Vanilla Cream soda has one of the most intense creamy caramel flavors of vanilla I’ve ever experienced in a soda. It was almost like eating the liquefied caramel Starbucks puts in the Caramel Macchiato.

The soda has a light beige complexion and is nearly transparent. The company’s website touts a tradition of making bottled beverages since 1895. You can order it online at Soda Samurai or from Galco’s.

The bottler has been known mostly for its coffee-based beverages, but also has a growing line of sodas.

The next closest vanilla cream soda I’d compare it to would be Henry Weinhard’s Vanilla Cream Soda. Weinhard’s is a  honey vanilla cream soda. I don’t know how that makes it different, but I assume it means they put honey in it.

They’re both tasty. But I did a little research and discovered that Henry Weinhard’s soda distribution is actually a separate enterprise based in Fort Worth, Texas. Weinhard’s soda uses HFCS — high fructose corn syrup — which is a big no-no (Manhattan uses cane sugar). That will get you voted off the soda pop island.

Saw VI Movie Poster Actually Depicts CAT-5 Network Cable Crimping Tool

I was out running this morning and while waiting for the light to change, I got a chance to take a close look at the new Saw VI movie poster. And then I noticed something funny about one of the “scary tools” they used as a prop in the photo.

So, the thing that makes the big V in this picture …

… is actually one of these (a crimping tool) …

Which makes me a lot more willing to see the movie, actually.

Now mind you, there are certain parts of my body that I wouldn’t want to crimp (or have crimped, for that matter), but having used these things dozens of times, the image not strike fear into my heart.

Teabag march DC 91209 on Flickr – Photo Sharing!.

God bless this good gentleman. Who is he?

From the Flickr caption:

<blockquote>

This brave man walked through the anti-health care crowd with his large poster and was immediately set upon by the crowd. One person spit on him, while others pushed and tried to grab his flag until the police intervened. Most of the crowd around him turned on him like rabid dogs, yelling epithets and things like commie, why dont you leave this country etc. Impressively, he remained unflappable and had this little smile on the whole time.

Swamp Buggy Racing

I remember there used to be broadcasts of races of amphibious vehicles know as “swamp buggies.” I never really understood the appeal, but then again, I’ve never needed to get through a swamp in hurry. I’m sure if I were in a swamp, I’d want to get out of it quickly. I suppose therein lies the appeal.

A Swamp Buggy Racing

A Swamp Buggy Racing

The premise is relatively simple. With the right equipment, and under the right circumstances, it is possible to propel a four-wheeled vehicle across the surface of water. Swamp buggy racing involves vehicles that have been purpose-built to do this. As you can see above, during operation only the foremost portion of the vehicle is visible. The remainder of the craft is obscured by the water plume created by its front wheels.

The sport seems to be confined to Florida, although the Wikiepdia article on swamp buggies is woefully inadequate.

More to come…

Fountain of 100+ Beverages

I got to try out the new Coca Cola fountains on Thursday. We went to the Pei Wei in Newport Beach where they had two installations.

Touch Screen Fountains

Touch Screen Fountains

I’d pretty much given up soda a few months ago, but I really enjoyed trying out the machine. That seemed to be half the fun of the experience. The other half was trying out new Coke flavors like Coke Orange and Coke Raspberry. I know it’s all fake chemicals, but it was still amazing to try out. And the fact that there was no cross-contamination of beverages all coming out of the same nozzle.

There were two menu levels. The top menu level – shown in the photo – has the main drink categories. Select one and you are presented with a “refinement” menu where you can more specifically pick, for instance, what flavor of Dasani flavored water you would like.

Overall, pretty cool. It’s like being fat in the not-too-distant future!

New Yorkers tend to seek like members of their species

Found this great photographer, Peter Finch. He’s done this great series of composite photographs of New Yorkers in their natural habitat.
