Happy birthday Wave Mechanics

Wired has a great article summarizing the significance of today’s anniversary of the consideration of the concept of the possibility of the existence of wave mechanics (physicists can be so modest), thus revolutionizing nearly all fields of scientific exploration and paving the way for this wonderful world of advanced technology.

To put it simply, first there was fire.

Then came the wheel.

Then these guys started figuring this stuff out.

So, kind of a milestone in human understanding.

Beautiful Ogilvy Mather animation

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NThCPpyoW7U&hl=en&fs=1]

Laughing Squid just turned me on to this beautiful ad for, of all things, Scrabble.

I’m a big fan of the board game, which only makes me predisposed to appreciate what I think I’d nevertheless consider this to be a phenomenal bit of animation.

For some reason (animated boobies?) Youtube might require age verification.

Mexico City shuts down due to flu outbreak

This is a little creepy.

The Washington Post is reporting that Mexico City is effectively shut down while a flu outbreak runs its course.

The normally fear-mongering news media in the US seems to have completely missed this one.

The World Health Organization is convening in Switzerland to discuss methods for slowing the spread of this virus.

Battling billboards

Joesdaily.com has done a great job of pointing out this great little bit of advertising brinksmanship.

New GI Joe series is ahhhh-suuuuuum

I’m watching the new GI Joe Resolute series. It is awesome.

***SPOILER ALERT***

A few reasons why it’s awesome – and by awesome, I mean totally sweet:

The animation style of Aeon Flux
Action sequences a la Matrix bullet-time
Updated vehicle designs
Ninjas
Moscow destroyed in the first episode
Big-eyed, anime-lookin’ techie female character “Dialtone”
Bazooka killed in first episode
H.A.A.R.P.
“There will be none of your crap.” – Cobra Commander

Left turn gone awry

I’d just like to take this moment to remind everyone that in California vehicles turning left always have the least right of way.

Way to go, Palms! Together we’re making the intersection at National and Overland worse and worse with each passing day!

Parking Privatization in LA

Image couresy of LAist.com

Just putting it out there: the city of Los Angeles is considering a plan to privatize parking enforcement.

I’m just one guy, but in this one guy’s humble opinion this plan has FAIL written all over it.

I hate getting parking tickets as much as the next guy, but I’d much rather have it handled by a bureaucracy than a for-profit corporation. I don’t want some CEO raising parking fines so he can improve the profit of his stock purchasing plan.

VIDEO: Gumball 3000 footage of THE HOFF and KITT with Gumball decals FTW!

Seeing that Mustang earlier really stirred something up in me.

2008 Gumball 3000 Rally: The People from DanceMediaVentures on Vimeo.

I’ve seen a bunch of Gumball rally videos on file sharing networks and even a few on Youtube. I kind of remembered there being one in the US last year, so I went looking for high quality video on Vimeo and found this!

The above video has the Hof posing in front of a “KITT” Trans-Am. It’s set at the opening of the Gumball rally in front of the Fairmont in San Francisco and KITT is all decked out in Gumball decals.
